Forester Repair & Service
The Forester is one of the most capable — and most maintenance-sensitive — Subarus on the road. We keep them running correctly whether you're commuting or deep in the Sierras.
Built for Adventure.
Maintained to Last.
The Forester is what most Subaru owners in the Auburn area actually drive — on highways, fire roads, ski runs, and everything in between. That range of use puts real demands on every system: the AWD differentials, the suspension, the cooling system, and for pre-2014 models, the EJ25 engine that carries one of the most well-documented head gasket histories in the Subaru lineup.
We service Foresters across all generations. The service requirements differ significantly between the EJ-engine models that came before 2014 and the FA-series cars that followed — and within those generations, the XT turbocharged models have their own maintenance considerations. We know which Forester you have and what it needs.
EJ-Series Forester (2003–2013) — Head Gasket & Belt Watch
EJ25 SOHC (non-turbo) and EJ205/EJ255 (XT). The naturally aspirated EJ25 is among the most head-gasket-prone engines Subaru produced — Phase 2 internal leaks are common by 150k miles and often earlier. Timing belt mandatory on all EJ-series models. If you own a pre-2014 Forester, these are the two services that define your maintenance timeline.
FA-Series Forester (2014–Present) — CVT & Chain
FA20D (2014–2018), FA24F (2019+). Timing chain — no belt service interval. Lineartronic CVT on most trims requires fluid service every 30k–60k miles despite the "lifetime fill" designation. Head gasket risk is significantly reduced compared to EJ-series. External water pump on FA20D is a standalone serviceable item.
Common Forester Services
Head Gasket Repair
The EJ25-powered Forester is one of the most common head gasket jobs we perform. Phase 2 internal leaks — slow coolant loss, white exhaust smoke on cold start, sweet exhaust smell — are the typical presentation. We catch them early with a combustion leak test and perform the complete repair: both heads resurfaced in-house, updated MLS gaskets, new head bolts, water pump, thermostat, and full coolant flush.
Head Gasket DetailsTiming Belt (EJ Forester)
All pre-2014 Foresters use a timing belt engine. The 105,000-mile or 8-year interval applies to both the naturally aspirated EJ25 and the turbocharged XT models. On a Forester that's been used hard — towing, mountain passes, frequent off-pavement use — we lean toward the conservative end of that interval. We do the complete job: belt, tensioner, pulleys, water pump, and all seals.
Timing Belt DetailsCVT Service (FA Forester)
2014 and newer Foresters with the Lineartronic CVT carry the "lifetime fill" designation that means warrantylife, not vehicle life. CVT fluid degradation shows up as shudder on acceleration — typically a fluid issue in early stages and a mechanical wear issue if it's been ignored. We use correct Subaru CVTF-II fluid and perform TCM adaptation resets after every fluid service.
Transmission & CVT DetailsSuspension & Alignment
Forester struts wear faster than almost any other Subaru — the combination of higher ride height, greater unsprung weight, and frequent rough-road use accelerates damper wear significantly. Lifted Foresters add suspension geometry changes that require post-lift alignment. We inspect, replace, and align Foresters whether they're stock, lifted with a commercial kit, or running aftermarket coilovers.
Alignment DetailsAWD & Fluid Services
A Forester used for overlanding, towing, or mountain driving works its differentials and AWD system harder than one kept to city streets. We recommend 30,000-mile front and rear differential fluid service intervals for Foresters that see real use — and brake fluid every 2 years regardless of use. Correct-spec Subaru gear oil, complete flush, documented service record.
Fluid Services DetailsPre-Purchase Inspection
Used Foresters are some of the most commonly inspected vehicles we see — and for good reason. A pre-purchase inspection on an EJ-series Forester should include a combustion leak test, timing belt status check, and CV axle inspection at minimum. We've identified head gasket issues, neglected timing belts, and worn AWD components that saved buyers from expensive surprises. Don't skip this one.

EJ25 Head Gasket Specialists
We've performed this repair on more Foresters than we can count. We know the early indicators, the correct updated gasket specification, the head resurfacing procedure, and the cooling system bleeding process that prevents a repeat failure. If you're buying, owning, or keeping a pre-2014 Forester, this is the repair you plan around — and we're the shop that does it correctly.
Built for How You Actually Drive
Auburn and the Sierra foothills are Forester country — these cars tow trailers, run forest roads, haul ski gear, and log serious mountain miles. We service Foresters with that use pattern in mind. Differential fluid intervals, suspension wear expectations, and AWD inspection frequency are all calibrated for real-world Forester use, not a parking-lot commute.
2-Year Warranty
Every service and repair on your Forester is covered by our 2-year warranty — head gasket repairs, timing belt work, CVT fluid services, suspension components, and all associated labor. We use OEM-spec or better parts and we stand behind everything. That warranty is how you know the work was done to last.
