STI Repair & Service

The most demanding Subaru on the road deserves the most capable shop. We service and tune STIs across every generation — correctly, with the parts and knowledge the platform requires.

More Power. More Stress.
Less Room for Error.

The STI is not a WRX with a body kit — it's a fundamentally different car. The EJ257 makes more power through a larger turbo and higher compression. The DCCD center differential manages torque distribution actively rather than passively. Brembo brakes handle substantially higher thermal loads. The 6-speed close-ratio gearbox has its own service requirements and its own known wear points. Every system on the STI is built to a higher performance standard, which means every system requires a higher level of care when it's serviced.

We work on STIs daily. We know the EJ257's specific service intervals, the DCCD fluid specification, which STI years had the pink rear diff fluid requirement, and the Ecutek tuning parameters that make the platform perform correctly with modifications. This isn't general Subaru knowledge applied to an STI — it's STI-specific experience built from the cars themselves.

EJ257 STI (2004–2021)

All USDM STIs through 2021 use the EJ257 — a timing belt engine with a mandatory 105k/8-year replacement interval. DCCD mechanical center differential. Brembo 4-piston front calipers. 6-speed STI close-ratio gearbox. Rear differential requires Subaru-spec gear oil — specific to the year. Active turbo cooling system on post-2008 models.

FA24 STI (2024+)

The 2024+ STI moves to the FA24 turbocharged engine with a timing chain — no belt service interval. Updated AWD system with new generation electronics. Direct injection requires monitoring for intake valve carbon buildup. New platform, same commitment to specialist care.

Common STI Services

Timing Belt (EJ257)

Every EJ257-powered STI requires timing belt service at 105,000 miles or 8 years. The EJ257's higher compression and boost pressure make belt failure even more catastrophic than on a naturally aspirated EJ — the interference engine destruction is the same, but the forces involved are greater. Belt, tensioner, idler pulleys, water pump, and seals — no shortcuts.

Brembo Brake Service

The STI's Brembo 4-piston front calipers and larger rotors handle significantly more heat than standard Subaru brakes — which means brake fluid service is even more critical, and pad compound selection matters. We stock pads appropriate for street STIs and track-use cars. Rotor minimum thickness specs differ from standard WRX — we measure before recommending replacement.

DCCD & Drivetrain

The STI's Driver Controlled Center Differential is a mechanical limited-slip center diff with electronic control — a fundamentally different system than the WRX's viscous coupling. The DCCD housing, front differential, and rear differential each have specific fluid requirements that must be matched exactly. We know the year-to-year spec differences, including the STI pink gear oil era and the transition to standard spec.

Clutch Replacement

The STI 6-speed gearbox and its higher-clamping OEM clutch see more abuse than any other Subaru drivetrain. We replace the full clutch assembly with flywheel resurface in-house. STI clutch jobs also warrant close inspection of the rear main seal — a known oil leak point on high-mileage EJ257s that's most cost-effective to address while the transmission is already out.

ECU Tuning

The STI is one of the most tuned platforms in Subaru's history — Ecutek is the preferred tool for most serious STI builds given its depth of access to the EJ257's fueling, ignition, boost, and DCCD parameters. We offer Ecutek and COBB Accessport tuning with in-house Mustang Dyno validation for every tune. OTS maps, custom tunes, ethanol flex fuel, and full engine build support.

Diagnostics

STI diagnostics require dealer-level tool access to the DCCD module, ABS, and the EJ257's ECU — not just powertrain codes. DCCD faults, boost control issues, knock events visible in log data, and turbo behavior under load all require live data analysis to diagnose accurately. We read every module and correlate findings before recommending a repair.

The STI Deserves a Shop
That Takes It Seriously.

In-House Machine Shop

EJ257 head resurfacing, flywheel machining, and engine machine work happen here — not at a third-party shop with a multi-day wait. When a modified STI needs head work or a clutch job alongside a flywheel resurface, we handle all of it under one roof with direct quality control at every step.

Performance Build Experience

We've built STIs from stock to full open-deck block builds. That experience informs how we approach every STI that comes through the door — we know what the car will eventually need at each power level, what the common failure points are when modifications outpace supporting hardware, and how to build an STI that holds together under real use.

2-Year Warranty

Every service and repair on your STI — maintenance, mechanical repair, and performance work we install and tune — is covered by our 2-year warranty. We stand behind the work because we do it correctly with the right parts and the right process. That applies whether it's a brake fluid flush or a complete engine build.
