Crosstrek Repair & Service

No timing belt. No head gasket history. The Crosstrek has a clean slate — the services it actually needs are straightforward. Let's keep it that way.

A Better Starting Point
Than the EJ25 Generation.

The Crosstrek launched in 2013 on the FB20 engine — a platform free of the timing belt interval and head gasket history that define maintenance planning for older Subarus. Every Crosstrek uses a timing chain. No EJ25 head gasket concerns. That's a genuinely better maintenance baseline than most of what came before it, and it means your service priorities are different: focused on the CVT, the AWD system, and the suspension rather than bracing for a major engine repair.

The Crosstrek is also one of the most commonly lifted Subarus on the road — a modification that brings real adventure capability and specific service requirements that follow. Whether you're on stock suspension or running 2 inches of lift with all-terrain tires, we service and align Crosstreks that have been modified for off-pavement use. It's a significant part of what we do here in the foothills.

FB20 Crosstrek (2013–2023)

2.0L naturally aspirated FB20 engine. Timing chain — no belt service interval. No significant head gasket history. Lineartronic CVT standard across all trims — fluid service is the primary drivetrain maintenance item. 2013–2017 FB20 models have a documented oil consumption tendency; monitoring oil level between changes is important on higher-mileage examples. PHEV variant (2018–2021) has additional hybrid system service considerations.

FA24 Crosstrek (2024+)

New-generation 2.5L FA24 naturally aspirated engine. Timing chain continues. Increased displacement addresses the FB20's power limitation. Lineartronic CVT updated to match increased engine output. CVT fluid service intervals and AWD maintenance requirements carry over from previous generation.

Common Crosstrek Services

CVT Service

The Lineartronic CVT is the most important maintenance item on any Crosstrek — more important than anything else in the drivetrain. Crosstreks used for off-pavement driving, mountain passes, and loaded highway use generate elevated CVT fluid temperatures that accelerate degradation faster than city driving. We recommend fluid exchange every 30,000–60,000 miles and use correct Subaru CVTF-II fluid — not a universal CVT fluid that claims compatibility.

Lift & Suspension

The Crosstrek is the most commonly lifted Subaru we see — and for good reason. A 1–2 inch lift meaningfully increases ground clearance for off-pavement use, but it changes suspension geometry in ways that require a post-lift alignment to correct. Lifted Crosstreks running all-terrain tires also accelerate CV axle wear at steeper angles. We install lift kits, perform post-lift alignments, and service the suspension components that take the most wear on modified cars.

Oil Changes & FB20 Monitoring

The FB20 engine in 2013–2017 Crosstreks has a documented oil consumption tendency on some examples — consuming up to a quart between changes without visible leaks or smoke. It's not universal, but it's common enough that we recommend checking the dipstick at 3,000-mile intervals on affected cars. We use the correct full synthetic at the factory-specified viscosity and note oil level trends in your service record so we can catch consumption before it becomes an engine problem.

AWD & Fluid Services

The Crosstrek's reactive AWD system distributes torque to the rear wheels as needed — it's effective, but it does put real load on the differentials on off-pavement terrain. Crosstreks used for trail driving and mountain passes benefit from 30,000-mile differential fluid service. Brake fluid every 2 years, regardless of how the car is driven. We use correct Subaru-spec products for every fluid system.

Brakes

Crosstrek brakes are appropriately sized for the car's weight and typical use — but off-pavement use, mountain descending, and brake fade from neglected fluid all catch up eventually. We inspect brake pad life and rotor condition at every oil change and service the full system when it's warranted. Brake fluid condition is checked at every visit — critical on a car used in the hills.

Diagnostics

Modern Crosstreks come standard with EyeSight, which adds module-level complexity to any warning light diagnosis. A single fault can trigger the check engine light, EyeSight indicator, and traction control light simultaneously depending on which system is affected. We use dealer-level scan tools that read every module — not just the powertrain codes a generic reader sees — and trace faults to their actual source before recommending a repair.

We Know How You Drive It

Crosstreks in the Auburn area don't just commute — they access trailheads, ski resorts, and fire roads. We service them with that use pattern in mind. CVT fluid intervals, differential service frequency, and alignment expectations are all calibrated for a Crosstrek that actually goes places, not one that stays on the freeway.

Lifted Crosstrek Specialists

Lifted Crosstreks are the majority of the modified Subarus we work on. We've aligned more lifted Crosstreks than we can count — we know the geometry changes a 1.5-inch lift produces, which camber hardware is needed to bring specs back into range, and what tire size works without creating AWD or CV axle stress. If you're building your Crosstrek for off-road use, we're the shop to do it with.

2-Year Warranty

Every service and repair on your Crosstrek is covered by our 2-year warranty — CVT fluid services, suspension work, lift installations, brakes, and all associated labor. We use correct-specification parts and we stand behind everything. That's true whether your Crosstrek is stock or fully built out for overlanding.
